How to Use This Generator

Pick Your Layers

Choose tone, setting, and secrecy level. These shape the kind of secret you get. A "gritty" tone with "major" secrecy gives you something dark and consequential. "Whimsical" with "minor" gives you a fun quirk.

Read the Bundle

Each result has three parts: Surface Story (what others see), Hidden Truth (what they hide), and Plot Hook (how it can explode at the table). Use all three or just the parts you need.

Adapt and Combine

Mix results together. Take a surface story from one and a hidden truth from another. Change names, swap setting labels, or adjust details to fit your world. These are starting points, not finished NPCs.

Common Mistakes

  • Using secrets too literally. If a result says "owes money to a crime lord," maybe they owe a favor instead. Adjust to fit your world.
  • Revealing everything at once. Drop hints first. Let players discover the hidden truth through play, not exposition.
  • Forgetting player agency. Secrets should create choices, not railroad. Give players ways to react, investigate, or walk away.
  • Overloading NPCs. One good secret beats three weak ones. Save extras for later sessions.

Example NPC Bundle

Surface Story

A cheerful tavern keeper who always has a warm meal and a kind word for adventurers.

Hidden Truth

They're a retired spy who faked their death and now feeds information to their old agency in exchange for protection.

Plot Hook

A former colleague recognizes them and threatens to expose their identity unless they complete one last job.

Questions GMs Ask

Can I use secrets from different results together?

Yes. Pull a surface story from one result and a hidden truth from another. Mixing outputs often creates the most interesting NPCs.

How do I keep secrets from players who find my screen?

Use the print-friendly view or copy results to a notes app. The page doesn't send data anywhere, so your secrets stay on your device.

What if a result doesn't fit my game?

Reroll or tweak one layer. The hidden truth and plot hook are modular. Swap the setting label or adjust a name to make it yours.

How many secrets should I prepare per session?

Two or three is usually enough. One for a key NPC, one for a random encounter, and one backup. Quality beats quantity.
